How Egyptians pay

Egypt's payment mix has shifted fast from cash toward cards, instant bank transfers and installments. Card payments run on Visa and Mastercard alongside Meeza, the domestic scheme launched by the Central Bank of Egypt and Egyptian Banks Company: Meeza now accounts for more than half of all cards issued in the country and works for in-store, online and government payments locally.

InstaPay, the app on top of the CBE's Instant Payment Network (live since 2022), lets customers move money between bank accounts, wallets and Meeza cards in real time using just a mobile number or an name@instapay address โ€” it has become a default way to pay merchants and people directly from a bank account. Alongside it, mobile wallets and the international express-checkout wallets (Apple Pay and Google Pay, both now live on Meeza) cover tap-to-pay and one-tap online checkout.

Buy Now, Pay Later is unusually large in Egypt. ValU (EFG, since 2017) and Souhoola give shoppers an instant credit limit and split purchases โ€” from electronics to school fees โ€” into flexible installments of up to ~60 months, with quick remote approval and an optional down payment. Aman, Forsa, Halan and Premium Card round out a deep local financing market that sits next to cards at most checkouts.

Two facts shape every enterprise checkout here. First, cash is still king at the door: cash on delivery remains roughly 40% of e-commerce, and Fawry's vast agent and kiosk network lets shoppers pay for online orders in cash anywhere in the country. Second, credit card penetration sits near 3%, and the CBE has tightened the use of internationally-enabled cards for cross-border spend. A foreign card-only checkout reaches a sliver of the market and authorizes poorly โ€” winning Egypt means accepting the local rails above, locally.

Built for enterprise

Everything it takes to run payments in Egypt

Local payment methods are only half the job. We carry the operational weight โ€” acquiring, settlement, FX, licensing and reconciliation โ€” so you can treat Egypt like any other market in your stack.

One integration, every local method

Connect once and reach every card scheme, wallet, bank rail and installment provider in Egypt through a single API โ€” no separate contract or integration per provider.

Local acquiring, higher approvals

We route to local acquirers and retry failed payments across alternate rails, so domestic cards and wallets authorize at local rates instead of being declined as cross-border traffic.

Settlement, FX & repatriation

Collect in the Egyptian pound (EGP) and settle in your base currency. We handle the FX conversion and the local rules for moving funds out of the country โ€” the part most global merchants underestimate.

Licensing handled locally

Process through our locally licensed partner entities. You launch without standing up a local entity or chasing a payments license of your own.

Payouts & reconciliation

Pay out to sellers and process refunds on the same rails you collect on, and reconcile every flow โ€” pay-in, payout, refund โ€” in one ledger, in local or base currency.

Fraud, disputes & compliance

Real-time screening, chargeback and dispute handling, and KYC/AML that matches local regulator expectations โ€” built in, not bolted on.

โ€œOur Return on Investment with Orchestrapay has been >12x. It allowed 14 full time engineering & product people to focus on our core features instead of Payment. New integrations used to take 6 months, they're now done in 2 weeks.โ€
